Hypnosis VS traditional change-work

Why should you choose hypnosis over traditional change work?

Isn’t this a great question to ask yourself?

WHY?

Nowadays there are so many life coaches, psychiatrists, psychologists and hypnotists out there, promising to help you change in a snap if you would only give them a chance. So who should you trust?

As you read this post keep in mind I have already made an assumption in writing it, and that is: You have an issue you could be better off without. And you are reading this post for getting more clarity on which approach might be better for you.
With that out of the way we can proceed.

When looking for the best approach people find themselves bombarded by information that might not be accurate. Mainly because friends are the first source of advice we get.  The problem with that is: they might not know as much as you think, specially when it comes to delicate choices as this.

Then, you go on the internet! As you start searching for advice and you get confused because everyone seems to have the magic wand that can make all your problems disappear, you find something that might be interesting . But just to be safe you start looking for alternatives and the more you look the more you find yourself overwhelmed and confused until you stumble upon HYPNOSIS. That’s when you say to yourself: “No way! I m not going to let someone go into my mind and find all my secrets!” or if you have seen a stage hypnosis show “No thanks! I m not going to let anyone make fun of me!”

Without realizing you just ruled out one of the best alternatives for you.

People tend to have a very distorted vision about what hypnosis is. In a nutshell hypnosis is a very easy way to bypass your critical mind and get on straight to the control panel in your mind.

You see with traditional change-work, people need a radical shift in beliefs in order to change, some call it an AHA moment (an epiphany) or as Anthony Robbins puts it a significant life changing event. Now there is nothing wrong with that except the fact your natural thought process will try to prevent this from happening (because we are hardwired to resist change even if we know it is good for us). This is why you hear so many people saying:

“I have been to my therapist and after one hour of crying I have finally got an epiphany.”

On the other hand hypnosis deals straight with the unconscious mind which makes change easier to take place thus reducing considerably the work time. And many find the process quite pleasant and relaxing.

In other words if you are looking for a challenge you should surely look for a life coach who will guide you through a number of processes and techniques (which involve light hypnotic states anyway) that will help you achieve the desired outcome in the long run.

On the other hand, if you want the process to be just a walk in the park I suggest you stop and focus on finding a hypnotist that appeals to you.

As I was writing this blog post I received a call that deserves to be added in this post because it is a perfect demonstration of how effective hypnosis is:

(The client had an issue with motivating himself to do, what he considered, to be boring activities )

Me: So how is it going after our session last week

Client : Well, Sorin, to be honest I don’t believe it worked!

Me: Does this mean you still can’t get yourself to do the boring stuff?

Client: Oh no! It is exactly as you said it would be: I just do it because after I know I can do things that are more pleasant. But the problem is that it feels I have always done it, it is difficult to explain but….. It feels I have never had this issue in the first place. Each time I find my self doing something, which before I would have just ignored until I was forced to do, I wonder if I would have done it even if we did not have the session.

Me: Did you have this experience before? Did you find yourself doing things you would normally hate doing with ease before?

Client: No I haven’t. But I can’t understand why do I have the feeling of having been able to do them with ease even before! Besides I thought after the session I would feel as a new person. Instead after I still was the same person with only this small difference: This feeling of being able to do boring things with ease.

The conversation went on but the rest is not important.

My point with this conversation is: After a good hypnosis session the issue you use to have would be just a thought to which you can’t attach any feeling.

I hope this post helped you to clarify some doubts about hypnosis and traditional change work.
